The Press-Register’s award-winning NIE Literacy Program engages area students in reading, writing, and learning in a special way that uses the most up-to-date textbook available, the newspaper. Studies show that students who use the newspaper in their classrooms perform up to 30% better on standardized reading tests.
The Press-Register’s NIE Literacy Program, which is sponsored by area businesses, organizations and our readers, is very successful, reaching students in public, private and parochial schools in ten southwest Alabama counties and two southeast Mississippi counties. The newspaper contains something for every student and can be used to teach every subject. We provide materials for all grades in the following subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies, History, Economics, Mathematics, Science and Journalism. We also host teacher workshops each summer to educate teachers on using the newspaper effectively in the classroom and present at seminars and schools upon request.
The Press-Register’s e-edition is an exact replica of the Press-Register that has many exciting features. With the e-edition, you can find a topic by using a key word with the search function. You can bookmark articles for your students to read as well as make notes right on the page. The e-edition comes with a text to speech module which allows the article to be read to you. Another feature of the e-edition is the search and archive function. Now you and your students can search the past 30 days of newspapers from our e-edition archive. For a tutorial, click on the NEW! E-edition tutorial listed under resources to the right.
